What do you do if you don’t want to pay a monthly fee to join a gym and don’t have the money or space to get yourself a full set of dumbbells? Enter the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells 552 adjustable weights. These space-efficient, budget-friendly, and versatile weights are just the thing to kick start your at-home gain train!

I know there has always been debate over what provides the best strength training workout. Should you use a workout machine or should you use free weights? There are certainly benefits to both.

According to VeryWellFit’s article on the subject (a highly recommended read), machines are a great option if you are just starting out and need to work on your form. The only downside is that they tend to isolate a certain muscle group.

However, free weights provide a greater range of motion, include multiple muscle groups (both primary and stabilizing muscles), and therefore promote faster muscle and strength building.

Now, you could decide to get a complete home gym workout machine such as this quality Body-Solid Fusion F500-FLP Home Gym that has all the resistance and exercise the average lifter will ever need. Yet, you’d have to be willing to part with a large sum of money and give up a sizable chunk of space in your home or basement!

Maybe that’s too big of an investment for you at the moment. Maybe a full dumbbell set, like these Rep Fitness Rubber Grip Dumbbells, seems like a better option. Again, though, you have to be willing to lose a decent amount of space along a wall in your home, as well as invest a pretty penny for a weight range of 5-50 lbs!

If those investments work for you, then great! Read no further and use those links to purchase either one. They are sure to be wonderful investments! For a lot of us though, that amount of space isn’t doable (myself included, as I live in an apartment) and that amount of money doesn’t work with our budgets.

That’s why I think you, your home, and your wallet will be pleasantly surprised with this all-in-one SelectTech option. Keep reading to check out my comprehensive review!

Secs and Features – What Can You Expect?

The Bowflex company has been around what seems like forever. I remember seeing the advertisements of their workout machines with the rod technology when I was a kid. In fact, according to Bowflex’s own website, they have been around since 1986. That longevity gives me great confidence that the company knows what they are doing.

Their motto of “Be Fit For Life” carries through the entire company. Having a goal of creating fitness products that bring the gym home to produce great results without huge expense is admirable (especially to those budget-minded folks, like myself!).

As far as these Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells 552 are concerned, there are some things you should know before diving into a purchase. The first, and probably most important, is that you will be getting a range of 5 to 52.5 lbs of weight in each dumbbell. The 15 weight increment settings are as follows:

  • 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 52.5 lbs.

You are able to easily and quickly switch between weight increments because of the dial system that releases different plates based on the specified amount of weight chosen. Because the plates come with a durable molding around the metal plates, they are also smoother and quieter to pull out of the base.

Additionally, there are some options that you can add on to your weights purchase:

  • The Bowflex 3.1 Adjustable Bench: The bench is padded and made with a high quality steel frame, with the ability to adjust it to 4 different positions including decline, flat, 45, and 90 degree angles. Easy assembly is required.
  • Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbell Stand with Media Rack: The stand comes with a sturdy place to set your smart device and follow along with workouts and reduces the need to bend down to get the weights, thus easing lower back strain. Easy assembly is required.
  • Bowflex SelectTech App: The app includes video workouts, exercises, tutorials, and a workout journal to track your progress. It is completely free and is available for both iOS and Android devices.

These add-ons’s are not necessary, but they could be useful if you have the space and/or need.

Lastly, the product comes with a 2-year warranty on all weight plates and parts.

The Pros

There is a lot to like about the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells:

  1. The Price: While it might seem like a steep price to pay, when compared to what you would pay for a full set of individual dumbbells that cover the same weight range, these are a steal.
  2. The Space Efficiency: Because the dumbbells are all-in-one, they truly take up a minimal amount of space in your home. That is great news for those who may live in an apartment and don’t like a bunch of clutter. They can easily be stored in a corner or a closet if you need the extra space.
  3. The Weight Range: Going from 5-52.5 lbs means you not only have a great max weight for most exercises, but can get their gradually, building up your strength as you go. For those who think they will exceed the 52.5 lbs, there is the alternate Bowflex SelectTech 1090 version. This goes from 10-90 lbs, but will comes at the cost of more money.
  4. Makes Free Weights Affordable: As I have already discussed above, free weights are a great way to build muscle and increase strength. SelectTech gives most anyone the ability to get the amazing benefits of free weights without breaking the bank.
  5. Workouts Available For Free: Having the app to pair with the dumbbells is really clutch and the fact that you can follow workout programs and journal your progress for free is even better.
  6. Awarded: SelectTech was placed on Men’s Health “Best At Home Fitness” list for 2019.

As you can see, I really like this product and it is getting recognized by those in the fitness industry. If you are still not sure and want to see more, check out this video to get a quick overview and to see them in action:

The Cons

If you have read any of my other reviews (you can check them out by clicking on the “Product Reviews” tab at the top the of the page or by clicking the links I will provide at the end of this post), you know that I like to give both sides of the story, and this one will be no different.

Here are some negative things I noticed from my own observations and complaints filed by others:

  1. The 552’s Can Be Limiting: If you are someone who has aspirations of being a heavy lifter, then stopping at 52.5 lbs might not be enough weight. However, those on a budget might not want to spend the extra money it would take to go with the 1090’s.
  2. Some Technical Issues: Probably the biggest complaint I have seen in other’s reviews of the product is the tendency for the plates to get stuck or parts breaking. I’ve seen this same complaint on multiple occasions, so it doesn’t seem like it’s one user with a gripe. That can be really troubling if you’ve spent the money and the dumbbells become unusable.

I want to speak a little more about the second con. One helpful thing is that each product comes with a 2-year warranty. In that time, I really think the dumbbells will pay for themselves when you consider the monthly cost of using dumbbells during a gym membership.

Secondly, it seems like Bowflex is responsive to issues like this as you can get in touch with their customer support and they released a video dealing with the very issue of troubleshooting “stuck” weights. I’ve embedded it below, so check it out:
