Like many of you, I enjoy fitness. Whether it is going for a run or doing an at-home workout, it doesn’t take me much to get motivated. However, when I heard that I could make money for working out? That got me intrigued. I immediately started researching and came upon the Achievement App.
Now you may be saying, “Hold up. This app is willing to pay me money to work out? What’s the catch?” This is a great question and one that you should be asking when it comes to this type of thing. I always go into something like this with a heaping dose of skepticism. That way I’m not caught up in false promises, and I encourage you to be the same way.
With that being said, is the Achievement App a scam? The simple answer is no, but there is a catch that is worth noting. We’ll get to that in a bit, but first, let’s look at this app more in depth.
What Is Achievement And How Does It Work?
Achievement is a company that is based in California. According to their “About” page they are a group of digital and healthcare experts. Their goal is to help people like you and me contribute information to improve his/her own health and that of others.
Through their app, they ask various health related questions, but always make sure that no private information is given to third parties unless you give them permission to do so.
They simply try to use health data from their individual members for research.
The Achievement App also helps you with your own health by keeping you motivated and mindful of your physical activity.
The basic premise of the app is that you sync up various health and fitness apps with Achievement. It then tracks your activities, whether automatically (like steps) or by you entering information (such as food logs, workout logs, etc.) into the various apps.
For your activities, as well as completing surveys that you get every once in a while, you will be rewarded with a certain number of points. Those point values differ based on what you are doing.
Once you reach 10,000 points, you will be rewarded with $10 and it will be your choice whether to have that sent to a PayPal account, directly deposited into your bank account, or given to a charity.
The Achievement App has an overall rating of 4.7 stars out of 5 in the App Store and that is out 15,613 individual ratings.
That’s All Nice, But What Apps Do I Need?
Achievement is currently working with 20 various apps that you can sync up with it. They are as follows (click on the name to be taken to the website where you can find out more information):
1. Apple Health / Google Fit: These are the basic health apps that come with your phone. In my case, Achievement takes my step count from this app and gives me 25 points for every 10,000 steps (a lower amount of points if I don’t reach 10,000 and higher if I do).
2. Dexcom: Used to monitor glucose, exercise, medication, and for logging food.
3. Expresso: A biking app that is linked to a stationary bike.
4. Fitbit: App linking to your wearable device that tracks exercise, body fat, food logs, running, sleeping, walking, water intake, and weight.
5. Garmin: App linking to your device that tracks biking, exercise, running, sleep, swimming, and walking.
6. MapMyFitness: Under Armour sponsored app for tracking exercise, body fat, sleep, walking, and walking.
7. MapMyHike: Under Armour sponsored app for tracking exercise and walks, specifically hiking.
8. MapMyRide: Under Armour sponsored app for bike riding.
9. MapMyRun: Under Armour sponsored app for running.
10. MapMyWalk: Under Armour sponsored app for walking.
11. Misfit: App for tracking biking, exercise, sleep, swimming, walking, and running.
12. MyFitnessPal: Under Armour sponsored app for biking, exercise, logging food, running, walking, and weight.
13. Qardio: App for tracking body fat, weight, and heart rate.
14. Record: Under Armour app for tracking exercise, body fat, sleep, walking, and weight.
15. RunDouble: App for tracking your running.
16. RunKeeper: App for tracking biking, exercise, run, swimming, walking, and weight.
17. Stop, Breathe & Think: App for meditation.
18. Strava: App for tracking your biking, exercise, running, swimming, and walking.
19. Twitter: This app needs no introduction, but you get points for health-related tweets.
20. Withings: App for tracking body fat, sleep, walking, and weight.
The Good- What’s To Like About Achievement
In my use of the Achievement App, I have found a few good aspects:
1. It is very easy to use. When you first download, you will be asked a few questions about yourself and your goals.
Then you will be given the option to sync the various offered apps to Achievement so that it can start tracking. There are only three menu options.
The first, and main hub, displays your current points, any survey or question offers (that give you bonus points), and a log of your activities and the points awarded for them.
The second is your app syncing area and the third allows you to make changes to your account, such as personal stats, email, password, and what kind of notifications they can send you.
2. Automatic syncing. With apps such as your standard health app, you can literally set it and forget it. Achievement will automatically update your steps and award points, adding them to the displayed log. It makes it easy and low maintenance.
Other apps are a different story, but we’ll get to that.
3. Some rewards are really helpful. I have received one survey offer that awarded 50 points, while another offered 25 points for just a few minutes of answering health related questions.
That’s pretty great considering you have to walk 10,000-20,000 steps for the same point totals.
4. It is completely free. Perhaps the best part of using Achievement is that it is absolutely free. Certain apps like HealthyWage and DietBet have you put up your own money, betting on yourself to lose a certain amount of weight.
While the payout is greater, there is also a chance you lose the bet and lose your money. For those who don’t like betting (not my cup of tea), it’s a lot more of a risk.
What’s Not To Like
Positives aside, there are also a few negatives that I noticed:
1. Surveys seem to come few and far between. That 50 point survey I spoke of came on August 12, the day I downloaded the app. The 25 point survey arrived August 27. I don’t know whether there are fewer survey offers because I don’t meet survey qualifications or what, and while it’s nice to get those bonus points, it would be even nicer if it were more frequent.
2. You are in it for the long haul. If you are looking to have something make you a significant amount of money, You need to look elsewhere. I currently have 1,131 points after a month and a half of tracking.
Now there are variables that affect this (such as I don’t always have my phone on me), but in order to reach 10,000 points, it’s going to take a little time and the payout is $10.00.
I will have to see what adding and syncing some more apps will do for the numbers.
3. The list of apps leaves something to be desired. Most of the apps Achievement works with are ones I had never heard of. Having the Under Armour apps is great, but missing are things like Runtastic or anything Nike+. These are really good apps that are not present (check out my review of the best running apps here), and that is disappointing.
One good thing is that they have an area where you can report problems and suggest an improvement. This should give the opportunity to suggest adding more variety to the apps. It’s worth a shot!
If we are answering the question, “Is the Achievement App a scam?” the answer is certainly a no. It does what it promises to do. Is it a way to get rich? The answer there is also no.
That’s not really it’s purpose anyway. It looks merely to keep you motivated to stay healthy and help others to be healthy too.
I would recommend this if you are looking for something to motivate you, that doesn’t take any of your money, and runs in the background with a small reward in the end.
I could certainly see how some would see it a waste of time, but if you are physically active and using apps, you might as well work towards a little cash while you’re at it!
