Most everyone is interested in living a longer and healthier lifestyle. The quality of our lives has a lot to do with how we nourish our bodies. I am always on the lookout for ways to eat healthier and I think I may have found one in the Longevity Diet. What is the Longevity Diet? That’s the question I aim to answer today.

If you look at the rates of obesity, heart disease, cancer, etc. in the United States alone, it is clear that we have a problematic relationship to food, to say the least. Everywhere you look, there are fast food restaurants, grocery stores filled to the brim with processed junk that’s loaded with all kinds of preservatives and unpronounceable chemicals.

According to the CDC, every state in the U.S. had an adult obesity rate of over 20% in 2018. In case you might be wondering what the harm is in extra pounds, obesity is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, stroke, liver disease, high blood pressure, cancer, gallbladder disease, depression, and pregnancy complications, via Healthline.

WebMD also notes that too much weight causes stress on your bones, organs, and joints.

All the above diseases can lead to early death.

Now, there are a multitude of ways to eat healthier to avoid these problems. However, one in particular has the potential to outrank most, if not all of them. It’s the Longevity Diet.

The Longevity Diet is a concept that was developed by Dr. Valter Longo, a biochemist who is the director of the USC Longevity Institute at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. In reality, it was not designed to be a diet, but more of an eating lifestyle.

According to Very Well Health, the Longevity Diet is mostly plant-based, but allows for seafood and occasional meat and dairy. Think of it as a not-quite-all-the-way-vegan. It puts emphasis on plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, olive oil, and low-mercury seafood such as salmon and shrimp.

Like I stated before, there is an allowance for a little red meat, poultry, and dairy, but not much. The diet also seeks to eliminate saturated fats, processed sugars, and processed foods. Additionally, there is an eating window of 10-12 hours during the day and periods of fasting (taking in 800-1,100 calories) for a 5-day span a few times during the year.

Dr. Longo spent time researching how cells interact with nutrition based on the diets of individuals who lived to be over 100 years old. He looked at people from long-living populations all over the world including Greece, Japan, Italy, and portions of the United States. He noticed that certain foods contributed to higher mortality rates while others contributed to lower.

What he found turned into the diet that I described above.

What Is Nutrition For Longevity? Behind The Company

Pros And Cons Of Nutrition For Longevity

The way I see it, there are a ton of pros to using Nutrition for Longevity.

  • Healthy: No red meat, no processed meats, plenty of fruits and vegetables as well as healthy fish (should you go the pescatarian route)? It doesn’t get much healthier than that.
  • Responsible: Not only are their farming practices clean and top-notch as far as sustainability and being ecologically-friendly are concerned, but they also want to help people live healthier lives. That’s a great mission.
  • Clinically-Proven: Unlike some fad diets, the Longevity Diet has a great deal of research behind it from a Dr. who is at the top of his field. It’s been tested by people for generations and since people who have reached the century mark have been eating this way for years, there is a great deal of evidence to back up the claims.
  • Ready-To-Go: I really like that the meals are pretty much ready to go. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks take little to no preparation while dinner is easy to put together in short order. That’s a beautiful thing for the busy individual.
  • Cool Add-Ons: From the Produce Box to the Coffee, Olive Oil, and Chocolate, their are even more ways to get an incredible amount of nutrition into your diet.
  • Dietitian Consultation: I really like that they offer a free consultation with one of their dietitians to put you on the right track as you begin this lifestyle journey.
  • Flexibility: Though the offerings contain no land meat, because the lunch and dinner options are salads, bowls, and pastas, I could easily see opportunity to add some chicken or steak if you don’t want to go full-on with the diet.

Like with anything, though there are some really great positives, there are definitely some cons to this service:

  • Expensive: As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Make no mistake, the quality of the ingredients from Nutrition for Longevity are the best you can get. However, it does come at a price. I did some calculations for the Pescatarian option and it comes out to between $12-$15 per meal, which can be a bit much for some.
    • As a note, some would also argue that the cost of eating this way would offset medical expenses in the future as you live a more healthy lifestyle. I leave it up to you to decide.
  • No Land Meat: While the Longevity Diet allows for a little of lean meat and dairy, you won’t find options for those sources of protein from this service. Fish is the only type of animal protein offered, so if you are looking for others, you won’t find it.

The Verdict – Super Healthy At A Price

What is the Longevity Diet? If you are someone who wouldn’t miss poultry or meat, then it could be for you. I could also see how if you did still want to have chicken and the occasional red meat, it could easily be added to their lunch and dinner offerings.

I think the Pros do outweigh the Cons, and if you can swing the price, then you probably won’t do much better health wise with another meal service.
